Hot chocolate has a way of making everything feel a little better, doesn’t it? That first warm sip is like a hug in a mug. Now imagine if that cozy drink also gave your body a little extra love with a healthy dose of magnesium. Sounds amazing, right? This magnesium-rich hot chocolate is here to bring comfort and wellness vibes all in one cup.

But before we dive into our favorite hot chocolate recipe, let’s talk about cacao. It’s super delicious and also one of the best food sources of magnesium! This mineral does the body good, helping your muscles chill out, supporting your nervous system, and even helping you sleep better. Who knew your cup of hot chocolate could double as a wellness boost?

For context, the recommended daily magnesium intake for most adults ranges between 300-400mg for adults. Pregnant individuals, seniors, and children have different needs, so it is always good to check what is best for you.

And cacao is not the only way to up your magnesium game. These are some other foods to incorporate into your diet to easily boost your magnesium intake:

  • Cashews (260 mg per 3.5 oz serving)

  • Blackstrap Molasses (242 mg per 3.5 oz serving)

  • Walnuts (158 mg per 3.5 oz serving)

  • Cooked Spinach (88 mg per 3.5 oz serving)

  • Cooked Swiss Chard (86 mg per 3.5 oz serving)

  • Lima Beans (74 mg per 3.5 oz serving)

  • Dried Figs (68 mg per 3.5 oz serving)

Starting with your diet is the best way to meet your magnesium needs. Whole, nutrient-rich foods like these are also packed with other essential nutrients your body loves. If you still need extra support, magnesium topicals or, in some cases, supplementation can be a helpful addition. This step-by-step approach helps you ensure your body gets the support it needs to thrive.

Using Cacao vs. Cocoa Powder

Not all chocolate is created equal, and the difference between cacao and cocoa powder is bigger than you might think. If you want to maximize your hot chocolate's health benefits and the feel-good vibes, it is important to choose wisely.

Cacao powder comes from cold-pressing unroasted cacao beans, which helps preserve its natural nutrients and antioxidants. It is rich in magnesium, iron, and flavanols that support heart health. Think of it as chocolate in its purest form, nutrient-dense and powerful.

We’re proud to offer high-quality organic cacao powder via our BodyLove Apothecary.

Cocoa powder is what you get when cacao beans are roasted at high temperatures. While it still tastes good, most nutrients and antioxidants are destroyed during processing. Plus, many store-bought cocoa powders are also loaded with added sugars and other fillers.

Here is where it gets even more interesting. Chocolate, especially in its raw form, is known for its energetic and emotional qualities. It has long been considered a “heart-opener” in many traditions, helping to promote feelings of love, connection, and joy. The natural compounds in cacao can enhance your mood and create a sense of warmth and comfort.

So when you choose raw cacao for your hot chocolate recipe, you are indulging in a delicious treat while also nourishing your body, supporting your heart, and tapping into the uplifting energy of this amazing plant.
