What is a Sugar Scrub?

A sugar scrub is a mix of sugar granules combined with nourishing oils and other skin-loving ingredients. When you massage it onto your skin, those tiny sugar crystals work their magic by gently buffing away dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling super soft and refreshed. When you use a sugar scrub, you get more than just exfoliation; it’s like a mini spa treatment right in your bathroom!

Benefits of Exfoliation for Your Skin

Exfoliation is a game-changer for your skin, and here’s why:

  1. Banishes Dead Skin Cells: Over time, dead skin cells can build up and make your complexion look dull and rough. A good sugar scrub helps sweep those away, revealing the fresh, radiant skin underneath.
  2. Keeps Pores Clear: Regular exfoliation helps keep your pores clean by removing dirt, oil, and other gunk that can lead to blackheads and breakouts.
  3. Smoothes Skin Texture: Exfoliating helps to smooth out your skin’s texture, leaving it feeling soft and silky. Who doesn’t love that?
  4. Boosts Product Absorption: When your skin is free of dead cells, it can more effectively soak up your moisturizers, serums, and other skincare products.
  5. Stimulates Circulation: The massaging action of applying a sugar scrub gets your blood flowing, which can give your skin a healthy glow.

Adding a sugar scrub like my calendula sugar scrub to your skincare routine is a simple and fun way to keep your skin looking and feeling fabulous. Plus, it’s a great excuse for a little self-care session!

Why Make Your Own Sugar Scrub?

Why bother making your own?

Avoid Unwanted Ingredients: Many store-bought sugar scrubs contain preservatives and synthetic dyes/scents that aren't the best for your skin. When you make your own, you have complete control over what goes into it, ensuring you use only the most natural, skin-loving ingredients.

Save Money: If you're on a budget, making your own sugar scrub is a fantastic alternative to pricey store-bought versions. While our natural sugar scrubs at BodyLove by Tal are packed with luxurious additives like shea butter and African black soap for an even better experience, you can whip up a simple version at home with just sugar and olive oil. It's easy on the wallet and works terrific!

It's Easy: It really doesn’t get easier than this! If you can make a bowl of cereal, you can definitely follow this sugar scrub recipe. It's a fun, rewarding project that’ll leave your skin feeling flawless.

Calendula flowers

What's in the Recipe?

Sugar: Sugar is an excellent natural exfoliant. Its tiny granules are perfect for gently buffing away dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling revitalized. Plus, sugar is a humectant, meaning it helps draw moisture to your skin, keeping it hydrated even as it exfoliates.

Oil: Using oil in your sugar scrub helps to moisturize your skin while you exfoliate. Oils like olive oil, coconut oil, or jojoba oil are rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which nourish and protect your skin. They leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and moisturized.

Calendula: This sunny yellow flower is well-known for supporting the skin. It's anti-inflammatory and packed with antioxidants, making it ideal for soothing irritated skin, promoting overall skin health, and providing deep nourishment. Calendula is the main ingredient in our calendula salve for this very reason! Its gentle yet powerful benefits make it perfect for a sugar scrub, leaving your skin feeling more calm, healthy, and glowing.

Adding calendula to your sugar scrub is a fun and simple way to start practicing herbalism at home and connecting with the power of plants. However, if you don’t have calendula or don’t want to purchase any, you can leave it out of this recipe.

Calendula Sugar Scrub Recipe

Ready to make your very own calendula sugar scrub? To make this recipe, all you need is a few ingredients and about ten minutes of your time. Let’s get started!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup olive oil, plus more if needed
  • 2 tablespoons dried, powdered calendula

Instructions:

  • Powder the Calendula: First, you'll need to turn your dried calendula petals into a powder. Simply place the dried calendula petals in a coffee grinder and pulse until you have a fine powder.
  • Mix the Sugar and Calendula: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the sugar and powdered calendula. Stir until they are evenly mixed.
  • Add the Oil: Slowly add the olive oil to the sugar mixture, stirring as you pour. Mix until the sugar is fully coated with oil. If the mixture seems too dry, add more oil, a teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
  • Store: Transfer your sugar scrub into a clean, airtight container. It’s now ready to use! This scrub should last for several months if stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Over time, natural products can degrade. Check the scrub periodically for any changes in texture, color, or smell. If you notice any signs of spoilage, it’s best to discard the scrub.

How to Use:

  • Prepare Your Skin: Wet your skin in the shower or bath to prepare for exfoliation.
  • Apply the Scrub: Take a small amount of the calendula sugar scrub and gently massage it onto your skin in circular motions. Give special attention to rough or dry areas, like elbows, knees, and feet.
  • Rinse Off: Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Be careful, as the oils can make your shower or tub slippery.
  • Moisturize: After exfoliating, pat your skin dry and follow up with your favorite moisturizer to lock in hydration. I love using our body butter at this stage, which is great for all skin types!
