12 Beginner's Herbs for Your Home Apothecary

Posted by Natalya King on

Starting your home apothecary can feel like a lot, especially in the beginning. There’s so much to think about: which herbs are worth it, how to use them safely, how to keep them fresh. I’ve seen so many people waste money on stuff they don’t need or herbs they didn’t use.

I get it. I’ve been there, y’all. After running our apothecary for almost a decade now, I’ve seen exactly where most folks begin, where they get stuck, and what helps them feel confident. So today, I’m sharing 12 tried-and-true beginner’s herbs that I believe every home apothecary should have. These are some of my favorite herbs that make caring for yourself and your family feel a lot less overwhelming and a whole lot more nourishing:

1. Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula is one of my ride-or-die herbs. I love how it helps your lymph move, so your body can clear out what it doesn’t need.* It’s also amazing for calming angry skin* and bringing back that healthy glow. If you ask me, everyone needs a jar of calendula in their home apothecary.

2. Rose (Rosa spp.)

Rose is my go-to when I want to feel soft, inside and out. She calms hot, cranky skin* and adds just the right touch of moisture without feeling heavy. Whenever my heart’s a little tender or my skin needs some love, you can bet I’m reaching for my girl rose.

3. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)

Dandelion root is one of my favorite herbs for giving your liver and skin some extra love.* It helps your body clear out what it doesn’t need so you can feel lighter and glow brighter.* When I feel like I need a good inside-out reset, I know dandelion has my back.

4.  Peppermint (Mentha x piperita)

When I think of peppermint, I think ahhh, pure refreshment. She’s my go-to when my belly’s acting up, my head feels foggy, or I need that wake-up call without the coffee.* One sip of peppermint tea and it’s like, okay girl, we’re back. Every home apothecary needs that kind of magic.

5. Elderberry (Sambucus nigra)

You already know I don’t play about elderberry. This is one of my top choices for immune support, especially when everyone’s sniffling and coughing.* I always keep elderberry syrup or tea on hand because it’s gentle, tasty, and works with your body to help you bounce back fast. Every home apothecary needs this one, y’all!

6. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

Chamomile is one of those herbs that feels like a warm hug. She’s been used for centuries to calm the nerves, soothe a tight belly, and help you wind down when your mind won’t quit.* When your period’s creeping up or stress has you feeling snappy, a strong cup of chamomile tea belongs in every home apothecary.

7. Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

This spicy root helps ease period cramps, supports digestion, and gives your immune system that extra push when you’re fighting something.* From tea to soups, ginger always shows up when your cycle, gut, or body needs some deep, fiery love.

8. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Let me tell y’all something: I wish more people knew about ashwagandha. This root has been holding it down in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries. It’s known for building strength, stamina, and helping calm anxiety when life gets wild.* When your stress is high or your energy’s dragging, ashwagandha is one of those herbs that always comes through.

9. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus)

Mullein has pure mama energy: soft, grounding, and always ready to help when you’re feeling rough. I love it for calming those dry, barking coughs with trusted respiratory support.*  If you’re putting together a family-friendly home apothecary, mullein’s gentle leaves and flowers make everyone feel cared for.

10. Rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus)

Rosemary has big “got your back” vibes. She keeps your hair strong and your scalp happy, helps clear brain fog when you need to feel sharp, and even supports digestion when things feel heavy.* I love how she brings warmth, circulation, and that fresh, uplifting scent into every home apothecary.

11. Lavender (Lavendula spp.)

Lavender is that girl for keeping you calm, grounded, and feeling fresh. She’s who you call on when your mind’s racing, your shoulders are tight, or you just want to add a little peace to your day.* Sprinkle her in your tea, your bath, or your bedtime routine. Every home apothecary needs lavender’s loving touch.

12. Nettle (Urtica dioica)

Nettle is pure deep nourishment, y’all. She’s one of my favorites for calming allergies and giving your body a big dose of minerals when you’re feeling depleted.* If you’re dealing with heavy cycles, low energy, or just want that gentle cleansing vibe, nettle deserves a spot in your home apothecary.

I just want to say how grateful I am for every single one of you who is here, learning and growing with me. It means the world to know you trust me to guide you on this herbal path. Thank you for letting me be part of your journey. I’m so blessed to have this community!
